Walled yards behind the terraces
Behind lots of the older terraces in Tynemouth and North Shields there's a walled yard, often flagged or concreted over years ago. Lifting the slabs and turfing is a common way to get a bit of lawn back.

Getting the ground ready
Once the slabs are up, dig out the hardcore underneath, bring in enough topsoil to fill the gap and rake it level. Turf roots into soil, not rubble, so this part is worth doing properly.
Banks, Metro streets and Front Street
North Shields climbs from the Fish Quay up to the streets round the Metro station, and a few of the banks in between are steep. Tynemouth's Front Street end is flatter, but narrow and busy with parked cars.
