From flags to a lawn

  1. Lift and clear

Take up the slabs or concrete and clear out the sand, ash or hardcore underneath.

  2. Bring in soil

Turf roots into soil. Around 100 mm of decent topsoil is a sensible minimum.

  3. Level and firm

Rake it level, tread it firm with your heels, then rake the top lightly.

  4. Order and lay

Order for the day after the groundwork's done. Order by 2pm the working day before.

Keeping a path or patio?

Measure the whole area, then take off the bit you're keeping. Our turf calculator does the sum and adds a little spare.

Set the soil so the turf finishes just below the slabs you're keeping. It makes mowing easier.

Can I lay turf straight onto concrete?

No. Turf needs soil to root into, so the concrete and the hardcore under it need to come out first.

How deep should the soil be?

Around 100 mm of decent topsoil is a sensible minimum. Rake it level and firm it before the turf arrives.

Can you lift the slabs and lay the turf for me?

Yes. We quote turf laying as one all-in figure: ground prep, supply, laying and waste removal. Use the turf laying link at the bottom.
