Terraces and back lanes
Many Sunderland terraces have a back lane, and they're a routine drop for us. The driver leaves your turf at your property or the closest suitable and accessible point, which on some terraces may be the back lane. Add any access notes when you order: the lane name, a house number painted on the gate, the garage next door.
Cobbled lanes
Some lanes in Hendon and the East End are still cobbled. They're part of the round too, so just add the lane name to your order notes.
Single-storey cottages

What's under a Sunderland yard
Plenty of Sunderland yards were flagged or concreted decades ago. Lift them and you'll often find a mix of ash, old brick and rubble rather than soil.
Old slabs and ash
Turf roots best into soil, so once the slabs are up, clear out ash or rubble and build a soil bed on top. Around 100 mm of decent topsoil is a sensible minimum. Rake it level, firm it with your heels, and make sure rainwater has somewhere to drain.
Limestone near the coast
Towards Roker and Seaburn the soil can be thin over limestone. It drains well, so new turf needs a bit more water. Add a little extra topsoil and keep the watering can handy for the first couple of weeks after laying.
