Re-turfing a front lawn

Strip the old grass with a spade, fork over the soil and pick out stones and roots. Rake it level with the path and the neighbour's lawn, firm it with your heels, then lay the new rolls in a brick pattern. Most fronts here fit a Back Yard Pack with a bit spare.

Clay under the grass

Further from the river the ground is often heavier clay. It holds water well, so it helps to open it up before you lay.

Forking in some grit

Before you lay, fork the top layer over and work in some horticultural grit or sharp sand to open it up. Level and firm it, and lay when the clay is dry enough to crumble. It helps the new lawn drain well.
