What's under artificial grass
Most artificial lawns sit on a membrane over crushed stone and sharp sand. Real turf needs soil, so all three come out before it goes down.
Under the stone
Dig out the stone and sand, then loosen what's underneath. If it's compacted or clay, fork it over.
A fresh soil bed
Around 100 mm of topsoil, raked level and firmed, gives the roots somewhere to go.

Can I leave the sand base in?
It's best out. Turf roots need soil, so replace the stone and sand with a bed of topsoil.
Does the membrane need to come out?
Yes. The roots need to grow down into the soil, and the membrane is there to stop that.

How much turf do I need?
