Out with the old lawn

  1. Lift it

Slice under the old grass with a spade, or hire a turf cutter for a big lawn.

  2. Loosen the soil

Fork it over, pick out stones and roots, and top up any low spots.

  3. Level and firm

Rake, tread it firm, then rake the top lightly.

  4. Lay the new turf

Lay it the day it arrives, then water it in well.

When to re-turf

Spring and autumn are popular, when the ground is moist and it's mild. Turf can go down most of the year, as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

Whatever the month, order by 2pm the working day before, and as far ahead as you can for the day you want. Got a long semi garden? See turf for ex-council semis. Selling up? See getting your garden ready to sell.

Can I lay new turf on top of the old lawn?

It's best to lift the old grass first. New turf roots best into loose, level soil.

Should I replace the whole lawn or just patch it?

If most of it is thin or bumpy, a whole new lawn gives an even finish. For one worn spot, a patch is fine.

How much extra should I order?
