Measuring common shapes
| Shape | How to measure it |
|---|---|
| L-shape | Split it into two rectangles. Length × width for each, then add them. |
| Curved edge | Measure to the widest point of the curve, as if it were straight. |
| Triangle or corner plot | Length × width, then halve it. |
| Circle | 3.14 × the radius × the radius (the radius is half the width). |
Rather not do the sums? Our turf calculator adds it up and takes you to your order.
A little spare goes a long way
- Add around 10% for curves and lots of corners, a bit less for straight edges.
- Offcuts are handy: trimmed pieces fill small gaps and corners.
- Round up to the next whole m², since each roll covers 1 m².
Laying round curves
Lay a hose or rope along the curve as a guide. Run full rolls slightly past it, then cut along the line with a sharp knife.
Start with the longest straight edge you have, and work out from there. New to it? Our first-time turfers notes go step by step. Front garden? See turf for front gardens.

Do I pay for the bits I trim off?
You order whole rolls, so the spare is part of your order. Round up and keep the offcuts for patching corners.
What if I measure a little wrong?
That's what the spare is for. Around 10% covers most shapes with curves.
Can I order an odd number like 23 m²?
Yes. Any whole number from 5 m², and the price updates as you type.
